Eilah HaDevarim and HaDevarim HaEilah

Parshat Nitzavim Vayelekh

by Rabbi Avi Billet

With two exceptions, the phrases in the title – which are comprised of the same two words just inverted (though a letter Heh (ה) is added to Eileh when it is the second word) – refer throughout the experience of Moshe Rabbenu to the Torah/ Ten Commandments or simply the word of God that is to be followed. The two exceptions are when Moshe conveys to the people the fallout and repercussion for the incident of the spies, and when he finished explaining what is about to happen to Dasan and Aviram just before the ground opened up to the destroy them. In those two cases Moshe finished speaking HaDevarim HaEileh (these words/things) and the repercussion followed.

In the following chart I present the context (in Hebrew) and a brief summary (in English) of how the phrase is utilized

Shmos 19 – the preparation for Revelation, in which Moshes gives these instructions to the People and the Elders

Shmos 20 – These words are the 10 commandments which follow

Shmos 24 – The people declare they will do and listen to these words of the Torah, which Moshe declares as being the main Covenant forged between God and the Jewish people

Shmos 34 – These words are the words of the Torah which Moshe is instructed by God to write down.

Shmos 35 – Moshe gathers the people to tell them these things for the construction of the Mishkan, and he begins with Shabbos – the paradigm of all Mitzvos

Devarim 1 – The introductory passage of the book of Devarim, the rebuke and encouragement that Moshe said to the Bnei Yisrael

Devarim 4 – when you’re lost and are seeking God once again you’ll find all these things (the Torah and mitzvos)

Devarim 5 – These words (The Ten Commandments) are what God said to you a long time ago.

Devarim 6 – The Shema – you shall review these words and they shall be on your heart

Devarim 12 – Observe and safeguard all these words (mitzvos) I am instructing

Devarim 30 – When these things come upon you, the blessings and curses (of Nitzavim) you will return to God

Devarim 31 – Moshe spoke these words as he walked around to comfort all of Israel on the last day of his life

Devarim 31 – Gather the people so I will tell them these words (the message of Vayelekh and Haazinu)

Devarim 32 – Moshe finishes speaking the words of the song (Haazinu? The Torah?)

The Devarim 30 and 31 references are in Nitzavim and Vayelekh.

The Noam Megadim associates Moshe’s saying these words to “all of Israel” as to suggest Moshe is still talking to all of us today, and that all “new ideas” which come up now were said by Moshe at that time.

In the beginning of the book of Devarim (Devarim 1 source referenced) Rashi notes that the words Eileh HaDevarim introduces words of rebuke. And while Rashi’s approach to this same rebuke is to suggest Moshe is speaking in code to the Israelites about their past faux-pas, there is every bit of reason to suggest that through all of this, Moshe is emphasizing the need for the Jewish people to be connected to the Torah, to seek God when they are lost, and to remember that his role of being the leader and the chief inspirer for a generation, is meant to last for their descendants forever.

Let us embrace HaDevarim HaEileh, in particular as we contemplate what a coming year could look like, if we take the steps we truly want to in order to get closer to God emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.
